ISI - INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL INSTITUTE

Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ)

I would like to obtain some statistical data. Can the ISI Permanent Office provide this for me?

The International Statistical Institute (ISI) does not retain any statistical data at the ISI Permanent Office*. If you are conducting any form of statistical research, it is suggested that you refer to the ISI Directory (see http://isi.cbs.nl/directory.htm) to find the appropriate organisation contact details.

How do I become an ISI member?

To become an ISI member, you must be nominated by three existing (elected or Honorary) members. A nomination form is downloaded or sent on request, filled in, and then submitted to the ISI Permanent Office. ISI members are elected by virtue of their distinguished contributions to the development or application of statistical methods, or to the administration of statistical services, or the development and improvement of statistical education.
Elections take place twice a year, under the authority of the ISI Elections Committee, whose recommendations are subject to the approval of the ISI Executive Committee. A nomination form can be filled in at http://isi.cbs.nl/candidateform.asp.

How do I become a member of one of the ISI Sections (Bernoulli Society, IAOS, IASS, IASE, IASC, ISBIS)?

ISI Section membership is simple. One must complete the application form, pay the appropriate registration fee, and submit the form to the ISI Permanent Office (IASS members must submit their applications to the IASS administrative office). Application forms can be found at the following webpages:

I would like to participate in the ISI Durban Session scientific programme.

  • How do I submit an invited paper?

  • How do I submit a contributed paper?

To submit a contributed paper:

Approximately 13 months before the actual Session, the local organisers distribute "Information Bulletin #1" containing a form on which you can indicate your intention to submit a contributed paper. Information Bulletin #1 will contain detailed instructions as to how you can submit and present a contributed paper during the Session. A website will also be indicated that you can access to obtain a template for your own paper, and also submit it electronically (it is also possible to submit it by hard copy if specifically requested). When contributed papers are received, they are batched according to an indicative classification list, published in the Session proceedings, and scheduled for presentation.

To participate in an invited paper meeting:

The subject matter content of all invited paper meetings for each ISI Session is determined by the ISI Programme Co-ordinating Committee, the ISI Programme Committee and the Programme Committees for each of the five ISI Sections. The members of these Committees forward their proposals for potential invited paper themes three months before the Session that precedes the Session in which the papers will actually be presented. A meeting takes place of these various Committees during the Session to finalise the content and structure of the invited papers, and to determine possible meeting organisers. The organisers then invite the authors that they believe are the most qualified to speak on that particular subject. Efforts are taken to obtain a broad geographic and gender representation in invited paper authors. Invited paper authors submit their final papers to the Session organisers (electronically, or by hard copy) for inclusion in the Proceedings, and for scheduling during the Session. Anyone can make a proposal for an invited paper meeting. The names of the various Programme and Programme Co-ordinating Committee Chairs are listed in the ISI Newsletter 34 months before the Session. Anyone can forward a proposal for an invited paper meeting to one of these individuals, although these maybe accepted or rejected at the will of the Chair.

I would like to submit news of my forthcoming conference to the ISI for dissemination to members. How do I go about this?

If your meeting is organised by one of the ISI Sections, please contact the Executive Committee of this Section for inclusion of your meeting in the part of the ISI Newsletter devoted to section news. If your meeting is not organised by an ISI Section, but deals with some aspect of statistics which may be of relevance to the ISI membership, fill out the form on http://isi.cbs.nl/calendarsubmitForm.asp. This Calendar is not published in the ISI Newsletter, but it is regularly updated on the ISI Website http://isi.cbs.nl/calendar.htm.

Where can I find contact details (address, e-mail, fax, telephone) for a particular national statistical institute or society?

The website of ISI (http://isi.cbs.nl/directory.htm) contains a list of all National Statistical Societies world-wide as well as a list with all National Statistical Offices mentioning websites, e-mail addresses, physical addresses etc.

How can I order an ISI publication or subscribe to it?

You can order or subscribe to any ISI publication by indicating this by completing and submitting the form that is available at http://isi.cbs.nl/orderform.asp. You can also send an e-mail, telephone, fax or letter to the ISI Permanent Office.

Some ISI Sections (notably the Bernoulli Society and IASC) have also advantageous arrangements for subscribing to journals for a greatly reduced price if you are a member of that Section. Information about these subscriptions can also be obtained from the ISI Permanent Office or can be found on the ISI website under the appropriate Section.

Why should I become an ISI member? As a Section member, I receive publication discounts and Conference discounts by paying a lower registration fee. Why consider ISI membership?

Firstly, by joining the elected membership of ISI, you become a part of the largest international professional organisation in statistics. This membership is restricted to the most prominent statisticians of the world, and it is an honour to be a part of such an organisation.
Secondly, measures are being developed to allow larger discounts to ISI members than Section members for meetings organised by the ISI, notably its biennial Session.
Thirdly, you support the work of the ISI, including the help that the ISI provides to statisticians from developing countries, the publications which ISI produces at reasonable prices for the professional statistical community, the Code of Ethics in statistics which ISI as the first statistical organisation developed in 1985, etc. In short, by becoming an ISI member, you demonstrate your support for the objectives and activities of the organisation.

How do I place an advertisement in the ISI Newsletter?

It is possible to place and advertisement in the ISI Newsletter (circulation: 4,000), by contacting the ISI Permanent Office at @cbs.nl

How do I pay my membership dues and how much do I pay?

Every November, the ISI Permanent Office sends out all members an invoice for their membership dues for the forthcoming calendar year. This invoice specifies the basic amount that one should pay. Please check that your address details are correct and  if you move or change your e-mail address, telephone or fax numbers. Several optional publications are also listed on the invoice that one can select. When the total amount has been calculated and specified on the invoice by you, one of the invoice copies should be returned to the ISI Permanent Office indicating your selections and the corresponding amount. On the back of the invoice we have indicated the various ways in which you can process your payment.
The most common method of payment is via the online secure electronic payment site. Bank transfers are also possible. The details of ISI's various bank accounts are listed on the invoice. Members may also mail in a cheque to the ISI Permanent Office for the appropriate amount, although cashing cheques results in higher processing costs.
If you have any questions about your membership fee, you can contact Margaret de Ruiter-Molloy (@cbs.nl) and she would be pleased to help you.
