Strengthening the Links Between ASA and ISI
The ISI participated in the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM 2002) organised in New-York last August 11-15 by the American Statistical Association (ASA) and some other North-American societies. Three events deserve to be related:
- An invited panel session was sponsored by the ISI on Tuesday, August 13, on the topic: “International Statistics: What? Why? How?”. This session was organised by ISI Past President, Jean-Louis Bodin, and chaired by ISI President-Elect, Steve Stigler. See the photo below for the names of the other panellists.
- The ISI booth was situated in the registration hall, where it was possible to disseminate information about both ISI events (54th in Berlin next year and 55th in Sydney in 2005) and ISI Section activities to the 5,000 JSM 2002 participants, and provide the opportunity for them to apply for Section membership.
- ISI Director, Marcel van den Broecke, met the Executive Director of the ASA, William B. Smith and they concluded that it would be worthy to strengthen the links between the two societies, through an exchange of information and possibly by organising some joint events in the future.
