In this issue we report the CompStat 2002 conference and information on the coming conferences. More detail information can be found via the IASC homepage: http://www.stat.unipg.it/iasc.
Report of the XV CompStat Conference
This year the XV. Compstat conference took place in Berlin, Germany from August 24th to 28th 2002. The event was merged with the Computational Finance Conference to provide closer links between these two fields of science. Compstat was organized by the Institute for Statistics and Econometrics of the School of Business and Economics of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, together with Freie Universität and the Weierstrass Institute.
Nearly 350 Participants from 36 nations came to Berlin: Nearly a fourth from Germany, more than 11 percent from Japan and 10 percent from Spain and Italy. Five percent came from the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the Czech Republic.
The programme was comprised of nine invited lectures, 88 full contributed papers, 71 short communications and 50 poster presentations. Topics related to Computational Finance, Statistics of E-commerce, Mining Very Large Statistical Data-bases, Complex Data Structures in the Biosciences and Net based Statistics.
The invited lectures were given by:
Attendance at the Compstat 2002 included 340 participants coming from more than 30 countries, representing all continents and including people from the academic, industrial and private sectors operating in relative fields.
Several social events were organised during the conference (welcome reception, a guided excursion and a sightseeing boat tour with Gala Dinner). These events helped to create a pleasant atmosphere in which social and scientific exchanges took place.
The young author's awards were given to Simon Urbanek for "Different ways to see a tree - KLIMT", Sabine Verboven and Mia Hubert for "Robust principal components regression" and Claudio Conversano and Carmela Cappelli for "Missing data incremental imputation through tree-based methods". Colin Rose was awarded with the MD*Tech Prize for the best software contribution for his mathstatica package; Isabel Serrano, Juan Jose Hoyo and Dolores Gonzàlez received the poster award for "Non-linear state space models and Gibbs sampling applied to fisheries stock assessment".
