REPORT BY XAVIER CHAROY
Tore Dalenius
Some sad news for the IASS, as well as for the entire ISI, is the death of Tore Dalenius. He was one of the founding fathers of the IASS. When the Association was created in 1973, during the Vienna Session of ISI, he became its first Scientific Secretary (1973-75). He was elected to the same position for the 1975-77 term. He then acted as President-elect (1977-79) and President (1979-81) of the Association. On behalf of the IASS, I would like to pay tribute to his memory and I am sure our most senior members, those who knew him and worked with him, will also share our high regard for him.
Meetings
I would like to take this opportunity to focus attention on one particular meeting: the DataClean Conference, which is to be held in Jyväskylä, Finland, 29-31 May 2002, under the sponsorship of IASS. The Conference is devoted to techniques for dealing with erroneous and missing data in large-scale statistical data processing. More information is available from the Website: http://erin.mit.jyu.fi/dataclean.
Preparation of Short Courses for the Berlin Session
Short courses for the ISI Berlin Session are in the process of being planned. The following topics have been proposed: Workshop on Survey Sampling; Variance Estimation in Complex Surveys; Small Area Estimation; Editing and Imputation of Survey Data; Business Survey Methods; Calibration Methods; Longitudinal Analysis of Survey Data; Analysis of Time Series from Repeated Sample Surveys and Questionnaire Design. All courses will be led by high-level international experts, and are applicable to statisticians from all countries. Participation from developing and transition countries is encouraged, and may be supported to some extent. Any comments from IASS members are appreciated. Please send these to scientific secretary Seppo Laaksonen (Seppo.Laaksonen@Stat.Fi).
Joint Conference in 2004
The IASS and IAOS have started taking steps so that the Conference planned by the IAOS in 2004 will be co-organised by the two Associations, in the same way as the 1998 Conference in Aguascalientes (Mexico). The 2004 Conference will take place in Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire). The general theme of the conference will be "poverty".
Publications
The preparation of the "IASS Proceedings" from the 2001 meetings in Seoul is progressing well. These proceedings will include longer versions of the papers presented at the invited paper meetings, where available, as well as some of the discussions. It is still too early to indicate an expected date of publication at this time.
