REPORT BY XAVIER CHAROY:
IASS management
The Executive Director, Christophe Lefranc, is having a new assignment out of France. He will therefore not be able to continue with his task. Fortunately, Alain Charraud, who has already been Executive Director from 1993-95, has accepted to take over. His e-mail address is: alain.charraud@insee.fr . Welcome to Alain.
Short Courses in Berlin
Information has been given in the previous issue of the ISI Newsletter about the series of Short Courses to be given on the occasion of the Berlin session. The Short Courses have also been announced in the Information Bulletin n°1 of the Berlin session. Any further information should be asked to the organizer, Seppo Laaksonen, IASS Scientific Secretary, at seppo.laaksonen@stat.fi.
Publications
The proceedings of the Seoul Session have been printed and disseminated in September/October. This book reproduces the papers presented during meetings organized by IASS solely or in association with ISI or one of its Sections. The editors are David Binder and Eric Rancourt; David Binder, now one of the Vice-presidents of IASS, was the chairman of the IASS Programme Committee for the Seoul session. We owe many thanks to them for their invaluable work. The Association is also greatly indebted to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) who took responsibility for the printing of this publication.
IASS/IAOS Joint Conference in 2004
(Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire)
The preparation of this important Conference has entered an active phase. A meeting took place on August 27, in London, to launch the work of the Programme Committee. Paul Cheung, IAOS President, Luigi Biggeri, IASS President-elect, representing President Xavier Charoy, Alain Azouvi, Chairman of the Programme Committee, Jean-Louis Bodin, past ISI President and adviser of the local Organizing Committee and a few others decided on the broad lines of the Conference and the timetable for its organisation. Alain Azouvi then started working with the Programme Committee in order to set up the themes of the meetings within the Conference. The other members of the Programme Committee are the following: Carmen Feijo (Brazil), Naman Keita (FAO), Koffi Nguessan (Côte d'Ivoire), Zarylbek Kudabaev (Kyrgyzstan), Achille Lemmi (Italy). We expect a few others will join soon.

Cochran-Hansen Prize 2003 : Competition for Young Survey Statisticians
from Developing and Transition Countries
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the IASS established the Cochran-Hansen Prize to be awarded to the best paper on survey research methods submitted by a young statistician from a Developing or Transition Country.
The next paper will be presented at the 54th Session of the International Statistical Institute, to be held in Berlin, Germany from August 13-20, 2003.
Participation in the competition for the Cochran-Hansen Prize is open to nationals of developing or transition countries who are living in such countries and who were born in 1963 or later. Winners of an ISI Jan Tinbergen Award are not eligible for the competition.
Papers submitted must be unpublished original works. They may include materials from the participant's university thesis. They should be in either English or French. The papers should be submitted to the IASS Secretariat at the address below, to arrive by December 30, 2002. Each submission should be accompanied by a cover letter that gives the participant's year of birth, nationality, and country of residence. The papers submitted will be examined by the Cochran-Hansen Prize Committee. The decision of the Committee is final.
The author of the winning paper will receive the Cochran-Hansen Prize in the form of books and journal subscriptions to the value of about 500 Euros and will be invited to present the paper at the Berlin Session of the ISI with all expenses paid (i.e., round trip airfare between place of residence and Berlin and a lump sum to cover living expenses).
