The ISI Dictionary of Statistical Terms

In line in particular with the ISI's goal of stimulating the development of improved teaching aids, the ISI is supporting the preparation of a new edition of A Dictionary of Statistical Terms. Previous editions of this work, edited first by M.G. Kendall and W.R. Buckland and later, F.H.C. Marriott, were published by Addison Wesley Longman (or its predecessors) on behalf of the ISI, and have served as an important reference tool both for statisticians and non-statisticians alike. With the ever-expanding nature of our subject an updated new (sixth) edition is called for.

ISI member Prof. Yadolah Dodge (Université de Neuchâtel) will act as Editor in Chief of the new edition, which will be published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the ISI. The publication date has been set for 2002.

The ISI has appointed an Editorial Board of distinguished senior statisticians to support Prof. Yadolah Dodge in his work, including:

David Cox

Jane F. Gentleman

Yuri Belyaev

Jana Jurekova

Daniel Commenges

Patty J. Solomon

Anthony C. Davison

Susan R. Wilson

Valeri Fedorov

Zhi Geng

The editorial work for this new publication is already in progress. In our ambition to make this new Dictionary the authoritative reference work of our profession, Prof. Yadolah Dodge enthusiastically welcomes the input of all ISI and Section members. Specifically, he has created a list of terms based upon the previous (fifth) edition of the Dictionary, and welcomes your views regarding the validity and accuracy of existing definitions, or your proposals for the introduction of new terms not in the present version. The internet database containing these reference terms can be found at:
