General

EURANDOM is a European institute for Statistics, Probability, Stochastic Operations Research and their applications. EURANDOM is located on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, was founded in June 1997, and has been operational since September 1998.

Stochastics is a mathematical discipline that plays an important role in our technological society. We are more and more faced with organisations, systems and processes so complex that a description and analysis in terms of random elements is more effective than a fully deterministic approach. Accordingly, stochastics is internationally flourishing, and is becoming increasingly important in other disciplines, like physics, chemistry, biology, economics and telecommunication.

Mission statement

The mission of EURANDOM is to foster research in the stochastic sciences and their applications. It achieves this mission:

EURANDOM has a junior staff of approximately 25 postdocs and PhDs. Positions become available throughout the year.

Research

Research at EURANDOM is organised into three programmes, each with three themes:

Each of these programmes hosts six to eight junior researchers, and is guided by two or more scientific advisors (senior researchers who have their main appointment at a Dutch university).

Each programme has a Steering Committee, consisting of international researchers working in the area covered by the programme. The Steering Committee oversees the various activities in the programme, advises on the scientific development, and helps to recruit and select applicants.

In addition to the above three programmes, EURANDOM runs a small number of projects. Currently, there are two such projects:

Funding

Core funding comes from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Both these organizations are founder of the institute and are represented on the Board of EURANDOM.

The Scientific Council, consisting of international top researchers in the stochastic sciences, advises the Board on research and strategy.

Funding currently runs up to and including 2007, and is based on the "EURANDOM Business Plan 2003-2007".
