ISI - INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL INSTITUTE

ISI and ISI SECTION MEMBERSHIP

MEMBERSHIP TYPES

Elected membership in the ISI

Elected members are elected by virtue of their distinguished contributions to the development or application of statistical methods, or to the administration of statistical services, or the development and improvement of statistical education. Candidates for elected membership must be nominated by three existing honorary or elected ISI members. Elections take place twice a year, under the authority of the ISI Membership Elections Committee, whose recommendations are subject to the approval of the ISI Executive  Committee. The annual dues for 2010 are € 73 for developed countries, and € 37 for developing countries.

ISI members who are aged 60 or over and have been members for at least 10 years may pay half the normal subscription rate provided that they are retired and not in gainful employment. Details are available from Ms. Margaret de Ruiter at @cbs.nl.

If you would like to nominate someone who you believe to be deserving and interested in ISI membership, nomination forms (referred to as "presentation of Candidacy") may be obtained in Word format here (A free 2003 Word viewer can be obtained by clicking here). This form should be submitted to the ISI Permanent Office electronically. It is also possible to fill in an online form.

The ISI Nomination Process has been simplified; for details, see http://isi.cbs.nl/Nlet/NLet022-04.htm.

Honorary membership in the ISI

Honorary members are elected from the ranks of "elected members" in recognition that their contributions to statistics merit special appreciation.

If you wish to nominate an existing elected ISI member for honorary membership, a nomination form may be obtained here (A free Word viewer can be obtained by clicking here). This form should be electronically submitted to the ISI Permanent Office. If you cannot utilise this format, please contact @cbs.nl. Nominations are reviewed by the Membership Elections Committee, subject to the approval of the ISI Executive Committee.

Ex-Officio/Affiliated Membership in the ISI

ISI Ex-Officio members are occupants of leading positions in official national statistical agencies or societies and international organisations designated by the Council, or represent organisations affiliated with the Institute. Approximately one hundred national statistical agencies have taken up ex-officio membership to date. In addition, approximately fifty inter-governmental organisations, international and national statistical societies are represented in the Institute by ex-officio members.

If you are interested in Ex-Officio or Affiliated membership please contact the ISI Permanent Office at @cbs.nl.

Corporate membership in the ISI

Corporate membership is available to all institutions and enterprises, which share or support the aims of the ISI. Corporate members are entitled to designate two representatives who may attend ISI Sessions and participate in the scientific programme of the Sessions. The ISI welcomes both "profit" and "non-profit" organisations as Corporate members.

If you are interested in obtaining Corporate membership on behalf of your organisation, please let us know (@cbs.nl)

Why should I become an ISI Section member?

Individuals interested in the objectives and activities of the ISI Sections may wish to obtain ISI Section membership. All ISI and Section members receive a copy of the ISI Newsletter, which contains a timely and broad overview of international statistical activities. All members receive large discounts on registration fees for several meetings and conferences and for a large number of books and journals (i.e. International Statistical Review, Short Book Reviews, Statistical Theory and Method Abstracts-Zentralblatt, Bernoulli, Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, etc.).

I am already a member of an ISI Section, why should I join the ISI as well?

One of the main reasons for joining the ISI is that members become part of a unified international body of select professional statisticians, whose reputation enjoys the esteem of the international statistical community. As the oldest international scientific organisation in the world, members can share in the ongoing effort to foster the public appreciation of sound statistical practice and the usefulness of statistical methods.

Many Section members join the ISI to support the common objectives of the ISI, which are broader than the individual Section objectives. Other members wish to become active within the ISI organisation, be it in an executive body or a specific committee. ISI members obtain financial benefits that are in excess of those offered to Section members (for example, registration fees for ISI Sessions and some other conferences are less than for Section members).

If you have specific questions about ISI and/or ISI Section membership, and ISI/Section benefits, please contact ISI Membership Officer Margaret de Ruiter-Molloy (@cbs.nl).
