
Established in 1885, the International Statistical Institute (ISI) is one of the oldest scientific associations operating in the modern world. Its success can be attributed to the increasing worldwide demand for professional statistical information, its leadership in the development of statistical methods and their application, and in the collective dedication of its members.
Our influence can be seen in the improvements in information and analysis throughout the economic, social, biological and industrial sectors. Its industrial influence is evidenced in advanced statistical practises, resulting in improved quality assurance. The ISI is also proud of its continuing support of statistical progress in the developing world.
The ISI is composed of more than 2,000 individual elected members who are internationally recognised as the definitive leaders in the field of statistics. Its membership crosses all borders, representing more than 133 countries worldwide.

The ISI publishes a variety of professional books, journals, newsletters and reports, representing the cutting edge in the development of contemporary statistical knowledge.
The ISI is especially renowned for its biennial meetings in which the entire membership congregates to exchange innovative ideas, develop new links and discuss current trends and developments in the statistical world.
The Permanent Office of the ISI is situated in The Hague, in The Netherlands. The Institute is incorporated in The Netherlands and has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Institute's activities are funded by grants from intergovernmental organizations, governments, local authorities, foundations, private business and other bodies, in addition to membership fees and proceeds from the sale of ISI publications.
The ISI has as its objective, to promote the understanding, development, and good practice of Statistics worldwide.
The ISI will pursue its mission by
a) promoting excellence in statistical research and
research training;
b) promoting excellence in statistical education;
c) promoting excellence in the practice of Statistics;
d) supporting the international statistical community in promoting the
establishment and maintenance of sound statistical institutions;
e) fostering the appreciation in governments and the public at large of the true
value of Statistics and statistical methods to all aspects of human endeavour
f) facilitating collaboration among diverse groups of ISI members, and among
statistical societies and other national and international organisations having
statistical interests;
g) providing coordinating services, such as a broad-based website, the biennial
Sessions, appropriate publications, promotion of professional standards,
outreach programs, and affiliation with other international bodies;
h) continually evolving and developing new initiatives to maintain leadership of
an evolving discipline in changing environments.
