NATIONAL
STATISTICAL SOCIETY OF CHINA (NSSC)
Introduction
The National Statistical Society of China (NSSC),
established in November 1979, is a mass academic organization for statistical research.
It has 73 corporate members (branches), they are:
- provincial statistical societies of Tianjin,
Beijing, Hebei, shanxi, Inner-Mongolia, Liaonin, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu,
Zhejiang,Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shangdong, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi,
Hainan, Sichuang, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinhai, Ninxia and Xinjiang;
- the Commercial Statistical Society of China, the
Public Health Statistical Society of China, and the Foreign Economic and Trade Society of
China;
- and branches of machinery statistics, armaments
industry statistics, petroleum industry statistics, insurance statistics, forestry
statistics, public security statistics, cultural statistics, light industry statistics,
geology statistics, transport statistics, labour statistics, investment statistics,
science and technology statistics, computerization statistics, SAS software applications,
Marxist statistical theory, northwestern cities, city statistics, tobacco statistics,
metallurgical statistics, electronics industry statistics, railway statistics, electric
power statistics and government organs statistics;
- and others 16 statistical societies of
municipalities directly under the Central Government .

The NSSCs 5000 individual members consist
of:
- all individuals possessing theoretical knowledge
of statistics or who have experience in statistical work;
- those who have earned a professional title as
either statistician, lecturer, assistant researcher, or have reached an equivalent
academic level;
- and those who agree with the aims of the NSSC and
are recommended by two members of the NSSC, can become individual members.
The functions of the NSSC
- organizing, guiding and encouraging its members to
take an active part in statistical academic activities;
- summarizing and exchanging research achievements
in statistical science and experience accumulated from statistical practice;
- hosting public lectures and symposiums on
statistics, translating, editing and recommending the publication of statistical books;
- cooperating with relevant departments to
strengthen professional education on statistics and conduct training for statisticians;
- assisting relevant departments in studying
problems arising in statistical works, making suggestions for improvement, and conducting
consultative activities;
- promoting international academic exchange
activities and studies, and introducing foreign achievements in scientific research and
development in statistics;
- according to the need, to hold some special topic
conferences , academic report meetings or others activities with the corporate members
(branches) of NSSC;
- to give a spiritual and material prize to those
individuals and collectivities who have made important contributes in the statistical
academic field.
Scientific activities
Adhering to the principle of "priority to
small sizes, localities and speciality", the NSSC conducts a variety of statistical
research activities. Therefore, closely around the establishment of the system of
socialist market economy, it emphatically studies the following issues:
- comparative studies on country's integrated
strength;
- research on the monitor system of economic safety;
- study on GDP;
- how does the sample survey satisfy the needs in
multi-objects and multi-levels decision-making;
- how does the statistical reform adapt to the need
of enterprise reform;
- study on the supervise system of the quality of
statistical data.
Other regular activities
- National members congress of the NSSC once a
quadrennium;
- Meeting of the NSSC standing council once a year;
- Meeting of the NSSC council every other year;
- National symposium on statistics every other year;
- Symposium on statistics for young and middle-aged
statisticians every other year.
Publications
- Statistical Research (monthly);
- NSSC Work and Scientific Research (10-12 issues
yearly).
